Exacerbation can occur with the administration of local anesthetics and recovery from general anesthetics, as well as during stimulating procedures such as extractions and surgery. An episode can even be triggered by the anxiety sometimes associated with dental visits. Narcotics, barbiturates and nitrous oxide, all typically used to control anxiety in non-asthmatics, should be used with caution and under medical supervision, in the case of asthmatics.
